Strength Beneath the Surface
Her name was Jackie Kickback and she was houndin’ for a fight.

Beneath the frozen Pacific lies a neon-lit city where only the strongest rule. By the President's own decree, anyone can lead–if they can defeat him. Few attempt the deadly challenge. For prize-fighting refugee Jackie "Kickback" Delgado, there is no other choice.

When Jackie’s father is stolen from the family to fight a faraway war, she is desperate to protect her brothers and the boy she loves from a similar fate. After years of training and scraping together a battle kit of augmented clothing, called GLIMa, Jackie climbs President Futigawa’s infamous Spire. Beating floor after floor of lethal challenges, victory is within her grasp. But the fight is nothing like she’d imagined. Her climb ends as she’s thrown from the Spire’s peak.
When she awakens, two years of memories are missing. Debilitating seizures wrack her body. Outside her hospital window, protests erupt. Some call her a hero—those in power call for her death. President Futigawa calls, too. Only he’s offering a deal.
According to Futigawa, he’ll sponsor her in the upcoming GLIMa Warrior Circuit—the city’s most beloved and bloody pastime—providing her with means to protect her sisters from a life of indentured work and her brothers from military conscription. In exchange, she will represent Futigawa’s company and help silence a growing class rebellion.
But when the charming rebellion leader begins planting doubts about the tournament’s legitimacy, Jackie realizes she’ll need more than just a new GLIMa kit. She must unravel forgotten memories, grapple with her traumatic injury, and uncover newfound strength to succeed. For this isn’t any ordinary tournament. It will be a fight for her life.
